For adventures seekers out there, this is the good news you must been waiting for. The Adventure Racing (AR) World Series has arrived in Malaysia. The Society of Sports and Exercise Medicine Malaysia ( SSEMM ) headed by Prof Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohd Mydin Mohd Musa have again brought Internationally acclaimed sporting events to our shores. After several years in organizing the popular World Congress in Sports & Exercise medicine – a 3 days congress bringing together renown doctors and specialist from all over the world to Malaysia, sharing their knowledge in Sports & Exercise Medicine. 2018 saw the congress embark into Dublin, Ireland.
The Adventure Race World Series ( ARWS ) better known as the coveted ultimate race of human race was officially launched on the 18th Sept 2019 at the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur hotel by ARWS MALAYSIA 2019 Organizing Chairman – Prof Dato Seri Dr. Mohd Mydin Mohd Musa with Patron of the event – YAM Tengku Arif Temenggung Tengku Fahad Mua’adzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah and Guest of Honor : Kuala Lumpur City police chief Comm Datuk Seri Hj Mazlan Lazim and EXCO Pelancongan, Alam Sekitar dan Perladangan Negeri Pahang Dato’ Sri Haji Mohd Sharkar Bin Haji Shamsudin. We were invited for the The Adventure Racing (AR) World Series launch event with our friends.
Now, Malaysia joins other AR World Series race destinations that include Ecuador, Chile, Paraguay, Brazil, South Africa, Ireland, France, USA, Spain and Belize as an event leading up to its World Championship, making it the first destination set in a tropical climate for the AR World Series.
Pahang with its vast ecological surrounding, general larger and availability of multi terrains and a lightly larger population accumulation and historical background has been selected for this inaugural race making it the deal destination for such a multi task race. With the Pahang Tourism assistance the event will sizzle with fanfare and activities.
The Race will take place on the 19 – 23 October 2019, starting on the 19 Oct from the Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur and finishing on the 23 Oct at Royale Chulan Cherating with a Prize Presentation luncheon.
On stage with the guest of honors were Royale Chulan group General Manager – En. Kamaruddin Baharin presenting the Official Hotel role to the event, highlighting the luxury hospitality of the Royale Chulan hotels and resorts to the International and local participants.
The 10-year franchise contract with AR World Series will own the rights to hold races not only in Malaysia but Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines and Singapore too. The Society of Sports and Exercise Medicine Malaysia ( SSEMM ) headed by Prof Dato Sri Dr. Mohd Mydin Mohd Musa will undertake to organize the Malaysian chapter and have roped in the Wilderness Medicine Associates Malaysia ( WMA Malaysia ) as a supporting organization for additional medical backup as well as Persatuan Pemotoran Malaysia ( Motoring Association of Malaysia ) as the logistic supporter.
The organizing committee has the showcase of Malaysian best in the area of Adventure Sports, Motorsports and Expedition races. From the pool of experienced Sports doctors under SSEMM to the Certified instructor and service provider for the Wilderness Medical Associates International, the October race participants are all assured of maximum attention in terms of both well being and safety.
A 12 hrs Raid ( 12 hours of non stop race ) covering 5 disciplines took place in August for potential participants of the October race to experience what Adventure Racing is all about. Endurance athletes and outdoor racing enthusiasts for the October race will cover no less than 333 km which will includes navigational skill, trail running, mountain biking, kayaking, caving, abseiling and for the 1st time in ARWS history… TREE CLIMBING.
Like other ARWS races, participants are required to make up teams of four athletes of which a minimum of ONE of them being the opposite sex. They will battle not only other teams but also challenging weather conditions, an unknown course that will only be revealed at the starting point, and physical as well as mental fatigue as they race non-stop day and night. All team members are required to finish the course for the entire team to be classified. The team that comes in first position will receive priority to enter next year’s AR World Series as well as the prize money of USD5,000.
“Other than an individual’s fitness level and mental agility, external factors such as climate play an important role when it comes to completing this extremely challenging race. The traditional climate for AR World Series is temperate; however, because Malaysia is a tropical country, it will offer a unique experience, giving athletes the opportunity to race in a different climate which in itself is a challenge to the mind and body. This will further push the athletes in developing their endurance skills and strength.
Registration for the AR World Series Demo Race will close end of September 2019.
Entry fees are USD870 (for Malaysian teams), USD1,800 (for international teams).
