The Red Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak, a beloved dish hailing from Malaysia, is known for its fragrant coconut rice, spicy sambal, and a myriad of delicious accompaniments. However, a bold and vibrant twist to this classic dish has emerged – Red Nasi Lemak. When I thought I have ‘seen it all’ until the red nasi lemak.

If Singapore offer green pandan rice nasi lemak, in Malaysia we have the Red nasi lemak.

This innovative take on the traditional favorite introduces a fiery and flavorful element is by substituting the coconut milk with dragon fruit juice. Yes, instead of the usual coconut rice, they simply switched it to red nasi lemak with ‘dragon fruit’ rice.

The striking red color of this dish not only adds to its visual appeal but also signals an intensified flavor profile. The taste of the red rice is similar to fried rice rather than the usual coconut infused rice. The red nasi or red rice actually taste pretty good. At the first, I thought it will be a disaster but it actually taste really good on its own taste and texture. if you look closely, you can spot the dragon fruit seed.

When it comes to nasi lemak, the other important element is sambal. Their version of sambal might not be the fiery spiciest sambal but the taste of the sambal is flavourful. I was with other Malay media and they do agree that they love the taste of the sambal too.

On top of the fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and hard boiled egg, they also added ‘acar’ as well as crackers as side dishes. The fried chicken is crispy and the meat is tender. This is a delightful plate of red nasi lemak. It is not just for gimmick, they make it tasty too.
