A Journey Up the Old Cape Point Lighthouse

Time to share our travel adventures? Have we been to South Africa? Yes, and we took a journey up the Old Cape Point Lighthouse. Perched precariously at the edge of the African continent, the Old Cape Point Lighthouse isn’t just a beacon for ships – it’s a beacon of history, resilience, and breathtaking views. Unlike its younger sibling, the New Cape Point Lighthouse, the Old Lady holds a unique charm, whispering tales of seafaring adventures and offering a glimpse into a bygone era.

A Climb Through History

Reaching the lighthouse is half the adventure. Ascend the winding path (or take the Flying Dutchman Funicular for a scenic ride) and feel the salty breeze caress your face. Imagine the countless lighthouse keepers who made this climb every day, their lanterns guiding ships through treacherous waters. We were lucky enough to witness the spectacular sunset view when we reach the lighthouse.

Step Back in Time

Built in 1860, the lighthouse exudes an old-world charm. Explore the spiral staircase, marvel at the thick stone walls, and peek into the lantern room where the Fresnel lens once reigned supreme. Each creak of the floorboards and every weathered brick tells a story of dedication, hardship, and the unwavering spirit of human ingenuity.

Panoramic Perfection

The real reward awaits at the top. Sweeping vistas unfold before you, encompassing the dramatic coastline, the endless ocean meeting the cerulean sky, and the distant peaks of Cape Point. Look out for playful dolphins frolicking in the waves, majestic whales breaching on the horizon, and the vibrant tapestry of fynbos clinging to the cliffs. Even if you don’t see the playful dolphins, the view here is breathtaking!

A Tale of Two Lighthouses

Interestingly, the Old Cape Point Lighthouse wasn’t always the sole guardian of the cape. Due to its high altitude and frequent fog cover, a new lighthouse was built lower down in 1919. Yet, the Old Lady continues to stand proudly, a testament to the unwavering spirit of its builders and a reminder of the ever-evolving technologies that guide our seafaring journeys.
