Cats of Parque Kennedy Lima Peru

One last travel story before the Chinese New Year. This story is from my last year’s family trip to Peru and this is pretty interesting Nestled in the heart of Lima, Peru, lies a charming park known by two names: Parque Kennedy (Park Kennedy) and, more fondly, “El Parque de los Gatos,” the Cat Park. Here, amidst vibrant flowers and the gentle hum of city life, reigns a feline kingdom. Over 150 furry residents call this park home, delighting visitors with their independent charm and playful antics.

The history of these park cats is shrouded in mystery. I did some research of this and there are some whisper tales of priests introducing them for pest control, while others believe they simply found solace in the park’s green embrace. Regardless of their origin story, the cats have formed a unique community, with dedicated “cat ladies” and volunteers providing food, shelter, and medical care.

As you stroll through the park, prepare to be captivated by the diverse personalities of these feline residents. Some sunbathe lazily on benches, their regal stares demanding attention. Others weave through the flowerbeds, nimble hunters stalking elusive butterflies. Playful kittens chase each other with bursts of energy, while older cats observe the world with wise, knowing eyes.

The cats have become beloved mascots of Lima, attracting tourists and locals alike. Some come seeking furry cuddles, while others simply enjoy the sight of these independent souls thriving in their urban oasis. The park itself becomes a stage for their antics, with playful chases, sun-drenched naps, and the occasional territorial dispute adding to the park’s lively atmosphere.

So, if you find yourself in Lima, remember: Parque Kennedy is not just a park, it’s a feline sanctuary. Respect the cats’ boundaries, offer a gentle scratch behind the ears if they allow it, and consider supporting the organizations working tirelessly to ensure their continued purrfect life. You might just discover a new appreciation for the independent spirit and undeniable charm of the cats of Parque Kennedy.

Parque Kennedy is also home of live bands from time to time. You can also visit the souvenir shops as well as the day tours nearby. Lima Peru is generally safe for tourist but do be vigilant from time to time. You can read all our stories about Peru at https://www.placesandfoods.com/peru
