Beh Leh Hainam Satay Melaka
Beh Leh Hainam Satay Melaka
Melaka, a Malaysian state known for its rich history and cultural tapestry, also boasts a vibrant food scene. Among its culinary delights, Beh Leh Hainam Satay stands out as a must-try for any satay enthusiast. Unlike the usual chicken or beef satay, there is a trend of pork satay restaurants / stalls in Melaka and Beh Leh is one of the oldest in the city.
My father been to this restaurant and told me about this. The reason I never been to Beh Leh Hainam Satay due to their usual long queue and also location as parking spaces are hard to find. Whenever I drove past and see a long queue, I will wait for another day.
This time, there was no queue and I managed to find a parking spot nearby and time to check out this Melaka’s best pork satay.
The name “Beh Leh Hainam Satay” hints at the restaurant’s heritage. “Hainanese” refers to the Chinese ethnic group from Hainan Island, known for their influence on Malaysian cuisine. While the exact details of Beh Leh’s origins are unclear, it’s likely a family-run establishment that has been serving up satay for generations since 1963! This means they have been running the business for over six decades.
The star of the show, of course, is the satay itself. Here, you’ll find skewers of marinated pork satay, pork intestine satay as well as pork heart satay perfectly grilled over charcoal.
The smoky aroma whets your appetite as the satay arrives sizzling on a plate. We ordered the three types of satay which is the pork satay, pork intestine satay and pork heart satay.
The peanut sauce, a key element of any good satay, is another highlight and Hainam style comes with Pineapple puree. Creamy and flavorful, it complements the savory grilled meats beautifully as it comes with hints of sweet and acidic after taste. You might taste it weird at first as you don’t expect such flavours from the sauce but you will enjoy it.
The pork satay comes with layers of pork meat and fat. For this, I enjoyed it as the meat is tender and I don’t mind that fat that offers more taste to the satay.
For the pork heart satay, it is harder in texture as expected. To be honest, I am not a fan of pork heart.
As for the pork intestines satay, their version is tender in texture but I prefer it crispier or crunchier in texture. This is totally based on personal preferences.
The pork satay here is small size (compare to usual satays from Kajang) and hence, I have to ordered second round of the pork satay.
I also ordered the cendol for desserts. I have no high expectations for cendol and for me, this cendol is good enough for the crazy hot temperature in Melaka.
Whether you’re a local resident or a tourist exploring Melaka’s culinary scene, Beh Leh Hainam Satay is a great option to experience authentic Malaysian pork satay.
So, if you find yourself in Melaka and craving some delicious pork satay, be sure to seek out Beh Leh Hainam Satay. The sizzling skewers, flavorful peanut sauce, and warm atmosphere are sure to leave you satisfied.
