Boulders Beach Meeting African Penguin in Cape Town
Boulders Beach Meeting African Penguin in Cape Town
Sharing our visit to Boulders Beach in Cape Town South Africa. What are those little creatures that most of us love? Penguins! Those tuxedo-clad birds of the southern hemisphere have captured hearts for decades. But did you know there’s a colony of these adorable creatures just outside of Cape Town, South Africa? Yes, at Boulders Beach, you can meet the African Penguins!
Yes, you read that right. At Boulders Beach, nestled amongst stunning granite boulders (hence the name!), lives a colony of African penguins. The cool thing is you can really get up close and personal with these penguins. No touching and feeding is allowed though.
These little penguins aren’t afraid of a bit of civilization. Boulders Beach offers a unique opportunity to witness these charismatic birds in their natural habitat. You can observe them waddling along the beach, preening their feathers, or diving headfirst into the ocean in search of fish.
Here’s what makes the Boulders Penguin Colony so special:
- Close Encounters: Unlike most penguin colonies, Boulders Beach allows visitors to get relatively close to the penguins. There’s a wooden walkway that takes you right past the colony, offering amazing photo opportunities while still keeping a safe distance from the birds.
- A Family Affair: Boulders Beach is a breeding colony, so you might be lucky enough to see parents tending to their fluffy chicks. Watching these little ones waddle around, learning to swim, is sure to melt your heart.
- Stunning Scenery: The beach itself is a paradise. Pristine white sand, turquoise waters, and the dramatic backdrop of the boulders create a postcard-perfect scene.
- Conservation Efforts: The Boulders Penguin Colony is a protected area, and significant efforts are being made to ensure the well-being of these penguins. Your visit directly contributes to these conservation efforts.
Planning Your Visit
If you’re planning a trip to Cape Town, visiting the Boulders Penguin Colony is a must. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Opening Hours: The beach has set opening and closing times, so make sure to check beforehand.
- Respect the Wildlife: Remember, you’re a visitor in their home. Maintain a safe distance, avoid loud noises, and don’t disturb the penguins in any way.
- Bring Your Camera: You’ll definitely want to capture these adorable creatures on camera!
- Be Sun-Smart: The South African sun can be harsh. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential.
We did a short visit, manage to take short videos and lots of photos here. It was very windy and cooling during our visit in late May. We really enjoy our time here with Penguins as well as the scenery.
The Boulders Penguin Colony is a unique and unforgettable experience. So next time you find yourself in Cape Town, don’t miss your chance to meet these charming penguins in their stunning natural habitat.
This is my third time up close and personal with penguins after my visit to Philip Island Australia and Penguin Island Argentina. The uniqueness about this place is it is the African Penguin with black feet and it is just backyard of the community here.
