World Greatest Vanilla Slice
You read it right, the world greatest vanilla slice. I stumbled upon the sign in front of a bakery that reads ‘World Greatest Vanilla Slice’ during a pit stop in a town called Ross in between Hobart and Launceston. I was recommended to visit the bakery and it is the well known Ross Bakery.
If you follow our blog, we blogged about the Kiki’s Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便) the Japanese movie where the director was inspired by the Ross Bakery to create some actual scenes in the movie. On top of that, the bakery also boasts of the ‘World Greatest Vanilla Slice’.
Of course the first thing I tried was the Vanilla Slice and their coffee too. Australia is popular with its love in coffee and Tasmania did not lose out on it.
The Vanilla Slice was soft and sweet. Topped with icing sugar, ordering a second piece is definitely a must. It was definitely good but it will be subjective to be the world’s best. Self acclaimed or not, the Vanilla Slice deserved credits and it is worth a drive to Ross for it.
What’s the secret behind the excellent Vanilla Slice? Well, apparently Ross Kitchen is still using the wood fired oven and it is an antique one. Hence, pastries taste better if baked with wood fired oven in general.
On top of the Vanilla Slice, Tasmania’s specialty the Curry Scallop Pie is another one not to be missed. As Tasmania is popular in producing best and fresh scallops, the goodness can be felt in a simple curry scallop pie. Many might be misled as the curry scallop pie is not spicy at all.
Hence, the crispy pie has the amazing scallop fillings with hints of curry powder. This was my first time having a curry scallop pie and it won’t be my last.
I am still currently touring Tasmania now and you can check out my live updates in Tasmania on our Facebook Page at fb.com/placesandfoodspage. Words can’t explain how beautiful Tasmania is so you need to see the pictures yourself on our page.
