Pelican Feeding at Kingscote Pier, Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia and located in South Australia near Adelaide. It is popular for its wildlife conservation efforts with only a few thousand residents on this island. The size is of the island is larger than Singapore as I was told.
There are only two options to travel to this beautiful island and it is either by airplane or by boat. We took flew in with REX Airlines. We stayed three days on Kangaroo Island and we were amazed with some of the outstanding sceneries in this part of the region.
One of the highlights of Kangaroo Island is the pelican feeding session at Kingscote Pier. It is a popular activity popularised by John The Pelican Man who gave informative talk about the birds before feeding them daily at 5 pm. He has been feeding the birds for more than 15 years. The Kingscote Pier is located near the small Fishermen’s Jetty behind the Kangaroo Island Marine Centre.
However, we ran out of luck as John was MIA (Missing In Action) and replaced by his mate. A donation of A$5 per person applies for the food he purchased of the pelicans. I consider it a small token of appreciation.
You can find dozens of tourist comprises of family and children during the pelican feeding time. There were easily more than a dozen of pelicans and seagulls. The feeding time probably takes around 10 to 15 minutes time and it took at least half an hour with the explanatory talk.
With the backdrop of the beautiful blue sea, you must not miss the pelican feeding at Kingscote Pier in Kangaroo Island.
Kangaroo Island is located in South Australia and you can fly to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide. The best way to fly to Adelaide from Malaysia is to fly direct to Adelaide from Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines.

Yes, at one point one of the pelicans actually caught the arm of the feeder. They are hungry pelicans.
