Sri Lankan Crab in Kuala Lumpur

Where to have Sri Lankan Crabs in Kuala Lumpur? There are a few places in my mind, Ampang’s Mei Keng Fatt, FattyCrabs.com, Causeway Bay Spicy Crab and Aliyaa Seafood restaurant. Except Mei Keng Fatt and I’ve tried the other restaurants and they are equally good with their specialities but the most reliable restaurant with Sri Lankan crabs remains Aliyaa, a Sri Lankan Seafood restaurant.

For those who didn’t know, most of the Sri Lankan crabs in the region go to Singapore. Singaporeans love Sri Lankan crabs because of the sizes and the meat. I still remember in the early 1990s I often travel to Singapore and I had Sri Lankan crabs. Most of the famous Singapore chilli crabs are cooked using Sri Lankan crabs.

In Kuala Lumpur, it is a different story. Sri Lankan crabs are pricier than the regional crabs so the demand is not as high as Singapore. Hence, with the depreciation of ringgit, having a Sri Lankan crab is pricier than you thought.

Thus, for a local supplier to get constant supply of Sri Lankan crab is tough. The prices are seasonal too. When it is near Chinese festive season, the price of the Sri Lankan crabs could double or triple if stock available.

Hence, the most reliable restaurant is Aliyaa, a Sri Lankan Seafood restaurant which is just shifted 48 G & M, Jalan Medan Setia 2, Bukit Damansara a few months ago. With their roots back to Sri Lanka, they seem to have a reliable supplier.

I tried their Signature Colombo Style Crab. I have no complains on the size of the crab, it weighs around 800gram and it is huge. The meat is fresh and juicy as I almost ordered a second one. The Colombo style sauce is thick and rich with flavours.
aliyaa plain puttu
Many crab lovers like to go with “man tau” (Chinese buns) but I prefer to go with Sri Lanka version of Plain Puttu (putt mayam). Even though it is not their recommendation but I prefer to have plain puttu with their thick gravy than their white rice.

If you want more authentic Sri Lankan flavours, you should book your table at Aliyaa. You won’t be disappointed by its unique flavours and services.

  1. Hi Wilson Ng & Rachel Ting,

I love reading your blog, and am very happy that you’re doing what you do… teaching people to cook with healthy ingredients is so important in fostering a healthy life and more importantly a healthy future. Today I am contacting you because I too am trying to do my part in getting people to eat and live healthier. In 2008 I set on a quest to look for the ideal cooking pot, one that would give me all the nutrients from the food being cooked without adding its own ingredients or contaminants. It was a personal happening that led me to do this and all my research pointed out in one direction — Pure Clay. After several years of research and travel I set out to make my line of pure clay cooking pots and their made in the USA. I had benefited so much from cooking in these pots that I had to share it with the world.

We choose to keep our raw material pure because the health benefits are overwhelming this way and greatly surpass that of cookware made from other kinds of manufactured clay like ceramic etc. I have come to read and love your blog greatly and would like you to consider taking part in our Affiliate Program so we can together promote this extremely healthy way of cooking to all your readers. You can find all the information about our cookware at miriamsearthencookware dot com or PureClayCookware dot com and sign up for the affiliate program by clicking on the affiliate tab on top.

And oh by the way we’re giving out pots to those who sign up early and the list is quickly filling up, I really hope you can be a part of it. We need your help in bringing back to life this beautiful, healthy, extremely eco-friendly method of cooking, it goes so well with your theme of helping people eat healthy, so do consider joining us.

    Good luck with your blog.
