It is Deepavali tomorrow and Petronas just posted their new advertisement on Youtube. The 2016 Petronas Deepavali Ad is called ‘I am Muniandy’ and we watched it and we loved it. 1.It is a Petronas Advertisement
Petronas have been producing world class advertisements for festive seasons. Some of the best Petronas Ads are directed and produced by the late Yasmin Ahmad of Leo Burnett (the advertising agency for Petronas). Even with her passing, the tradition of creating touching Malaysian festive season advertisements continues. The ‘Rubber Boy’ for this year’s Chinese New Year is fine example of a great story telling festive season advertisement. Hence, the benchmark is set for Petronas season ads and that’s one of the reason you should watch the new 2016 Petronas Deepavali Ad ‘I am Muniandy’.
2.It is Too Malaysian
Why do we say new 2016 Petronas Deepavali Ad ‘I am Muniandy’ is too Malaysian? Malaysians love to judge its book by its cover. It is a norm for Malaysians to criticise, share or comment on a post without even reading it. Same goes to this advertisement. Many believes the advertisement is too bias or stereotyping but when you finished watching the advert, you will understand the true meaning of it. Malaysians are fast in jumping into conclusions but don’t be late in greeting your Indian friends Happy Deepavali.
3.The Storyline
‘I am Muniandy’ is not the typical ‘touchy’ story or the emotional story which you can weep the whole tissue box. Muniandy looks like a gangster with a scar on his face. Goes to the hardware shop, getting some tools on a bike. Sounds like a typical bad ass story? Well, there is a surprise element to this and of course the ‘happy ending’. One thing for sure, the story is not cheesy and has the perfect element for Deepavali. We are not going to spoil, just watch the video already!
4.It is Deepavali
We have not seen many great Deepavali ads for some time and Petronas deserved some credits in producing ‘I am Muniandy’. There are a few things we earned from this advertisement. In the festival of light, the darkness cloud our judgement but in the spirit of light, we should see kindness in people.
We are proud to be Malaysians as we live in a multi-racial and multi-culture country and hence the amazing food also. In the light of the Deepavali celebration, Malaysians should respect each other’s’ differences and embrace similarities. The festival of light serves as a reminder to us to have compassion for others. Let the light shines within us and continue respecting each other as both individuals and as Malaysians.
