Updated 22/4/2017: Bangkok Street Food Remains thanks to Tourism Authority of Thailand

Bangkok to Ban Street Food Stalls by end of 2017

Bangkok’s famous street food stalls will be legacy of the past soon. By end of the year, all the street food stalls will be banned by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

bangkok ban

The main purpose of this decision to keep the pavements clean and tidy and hygiene issues too. So far, they successfully cleared the pavements of food vendors in areas such as Siam Square, Pratunam, and the flea market under Phra Phuttayotfa Bridge. No wonder, we didn’t see any food vendors during our trip to Bangkok last week. We thought the food stalls closed because of Songkran Water Festival.

Next on their target will be street food stalls in Chinatown Yaowarat and Khao San road.

We visited Chinatown last week and it was filled with tourists. The street food in Chinatown is one of the key tourist attractions in Bangkok and if they get rid of them by this year end, it will definitely affect the tourism of the area.

Khao San which is the world renown backpacker street have over 200 street food stalls. They will be banned by this year’s end too.

On top of street food stalls, all types of stalls including clothes, counterfeit goods and food stalls will be banned from main city roads. Main roads like Silom will not be the same again, probably cleaner and easier to walk without the street stalls.

However, there are still many night markets in Bangkok and they are not affected by the ban.
