The Gardens Mall’s “Green Moves” for a better planet
Have you ever wondered what happens to the food left on your plate after you’re done with your
meal? Well, over at The Gardens Mall, that food waste gets turned into compost to fertilise the mall’s landscaping. It’s been over a year since The Gardens Mall gathered 18 of its F&B operators as
well as grocers such as Justlife, MBG FruitShop and Jaya Grocer to collectively start a green movement. These companies have committed to diverting food waste from the landfills by composting them through the mall’s programme instead. To celebrate, the mall has launched its Green Moves campaign to share its achievements and shed some light on food waste in the country. Featuring a mock kitchen and garden, the campaign will share tips on how we can all reduce food waste and start growing our own food to help ensure food security.
Food waste such as diners’ leftovers, expired raw meat, along with rotten fruits and vegetables are sent to the mall’s composting facility daily. Through food waste composting, the mall has diverted 78 tonnes of food waste from the landfill and used it to generate 21 tonnes of compost to be utilised in the landscaping soil around Mid Valley City.
This August, the mall will also be sharing its compost with its shoppers. Swing by the exhibition at the North Palm on the Ground Floor to pick up free edible plant seeds and a packet of compost while learning more about food waste in Malaysia. On the weekends at 12pm & 3pm, shoppers can also receive free edible plant starter kits that come with planter pots, seeds, and soil that has been incorporated with the mall’s compost. The exhibition also features interactive activities for shoppers to participate in, along with details of the green moves being made by the mall’s own tenants.
The Gardens Mall is also proud to announce its partnership with Urban Hijau, a social enterprise that champions organic sustainable farming, right in the middle of the city! Urban Hijau is now exploring a partnership with The Gardens Mall to close the loop of the mall’s collected food waste by supplying Urban Hijau with a portion of the mall’s compost to be used in the farm’s operations and community programmes such as its children’s programme as well as its weekly Sunday composting workshops.
