In the wake of the news of there are hundreds of in-flight theft happening around Asia, time for some tips to prevent them.
Here are things you should know about in-flight thefts. They work in a group so it is hard to catch them but you can prevent it. Second, the thefts are not limited to economy class as I heard there are thefts in business class and first class too.
Here are some tips to prevent inflight theft:
- Secure your belongings:
- Lock your carry-on bag with a TSA-approved lock
- Place valuables in a secure pocket or bag under the seat in front of you.
- Keep zippers and pockets facing inward when storing bags in overhead bins.
- Consider using a travel security pouch or belt to keep important documents and valuables close to your body.
- NEVER store your cash in your carry-on bag and put inside overhead compartment.
- Be aware of your surroundings:
- Pay attention to who is around you, especially when you are sleeping or using the restroom.
- If you notice suspicious activity, alert a flight attendant.
- Make sure you take notice of others opening the overhead compartment and what they are taking
- Use common sense:
- Don’t leave your belongings unattended, even for a short period of time.
- Don’t flash valuables in public.
- Be cautious when accepting help from strangers.
- Again, don’t put in your valuables such as cash and jewelleries inside your carry-on bag and put in overhead compartment

- Choose a seat near the front of the plane, where there is more foot traffic and it is easier to keep an eye on your belongings.
- If you are traveling with a companion, sit next to each other.
- Consider purchasing travel insurance to cover the loss of your belongings in case of theft. However, you do need to make a report if there is theft.
- If noticed something missing from your carry-on bag, make sure you alert the cabin crews.
