Riding to the end of the world with the train of the prisoners (El Tren Fin del Mundo)
End of the world? Is there really such place existed? Isn’t it just a myth?
Well, it’s not myth. The “end of the world” is actually located at the southernmost city in the world; Ushuaia Argentina. Located at lowest tip in the world map above Antarctica, Ushuaia (Tierre del Feugo) has various names which include the “End of the World”.
In the past, Ushuaia has one of the most remote prisons in the world. Due to its geographical advantages, prisoners had no chance escaping the treacherous mountains and weather of Tierre del Fuego.
One of the tasks of the prisoners back then is to build the trains of the “end of the world”. Unlike the common trains, the trains of the prisoners are very narrow and it could only fit a handful people.
During the Chinese New Year last year, I spent a week at the end of the world including riding the “train of prisoners” at the Estacion del Fin del Mundo.
The ride took around an hour to two depending and the view of the Tierre del Fuego was spectacular. Though it was summer, but due to its geographical reasons, most mountains are snow capped.
This ride is commercialized for tourists so please do not put any high expectations on it. I did enjoy the ride and the scenery. The view was a killer, something that I never seen before.
The “End of the World” scenery. Lots of dead trees on the plain with the snowy mountain as backdrop.
Nature at its best, untouched at “the end of the world”.
If you make yourself at Ushuaia, you either take a pitstop as part of your cruise or you take a long holiday here, make a visit to ‘The End of the World Train Ride’. Since you made it to here, why not for the experience?
How to go to “The End Of the World Train ride” at Estacion del Fin del Mundo (El Tren Fin del Mundo):
The perfect way to go to “The End Of the World Train ride” is to visit the Ushuaia Tourist Center near the port. They have English speaking staffs to assist you and also the full schedule of the ride. Driving into the park itself could be troublesome as the rangers would need local guides to bring you there. The park fees was around 100 pesos (US$ 35) per person excluding other charges.
