The Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow Kafe Heng Huat Review

It came no surprise when the boycott news spread like wildfire lately due to an incident between the famous Lorong Selamat’s Char Koay Teow Kafe Heng Huat and a customer. This was not their first case as I was told.

I came to know about this popular char koay teow stall a few years due to recommendations by friends and clients. I was there a few times for my crave’s for Penang’s char koay teow.
The stall is located at Kafe Heng Huat, at Lorong Selamat. A small coffee shop and a char koay teow stall in front. Beside the coffee shop, there is a small open air car park. It’s hard to miss it.

The sisters’ trademark is the goggles. Cooking using traditional method of charcoal, the food tends to be tastier as many believed. The price of a plate of char koay teow starts from RM6 to RM 8.50. The price is comparable to certain food courts of Kuala Lumpur, it is definitely costlier than most places in Malaysia.

If the price is not an issue, then the waiting time could be another issue. Usually the waiting time is around half an hour to an hour. It depends on your luck. Weekdays are less congested while weekends will be packed by tourists.

After a half an hour wait, I got my char koay teow. Served with huge prawns, the char koay teow did live up with their reputations. While many Penangites claimed others are better, I was satisfied with this.

I’ve heard about their attitude problems but so far I have no problems with them. For the price with the huge prawns, it is okay with me. If you ask me, will I back to eat there again? I will if the waiting time is less than 30 minutes. Anything more than that, I will just walk away.
Shall we boycott them? Well, this is all up to you.
Thank you for reading.

  1. I don’t think the Lorong Selamat Char Kuey Teow are managed by ‘Sisters’. Sisters char kuey teow refers to another famous CKT located in Macalister road. So when you put the title as CKT sisters, it’s a bit misleading.. just my 2 cents. 🙂

  2. For premium priced Char Koay Teow I won’t stand to be insulted. I for one will boycott such shops.

Its not first time these stories surfaced regarding Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow. There are countless rumours going on for years. Last I heard was their prawns is soaked with harmful preservatives to give the extra delicious taste. True or not I don’t know but I am wary when hearing such things.

In the end its up to you, if you don’t like the hawker then don’t eat from them.

  3. Nah …. just another one of those come and go stories.
Come on, you think the tourists will stop flocking over to a place just because they were rude once to a customer?
Maybe a short stint their business will be affected, but in the long run … this may even increase their popularity.
Now that you mention it, I wanna eat a plate of CKT from Penang too. 🙂

  4. Went there once before with my friend from out of town, sing he’s a very big “spicy food” eater, he asked me to order for him so I did…

When I ordered, I told her to add more chili. The stupid auntie there said “OK, I will put more and more chili for you, let you eat till you die” (translated from hokkien).

That was t…he last time I ever went there to eat at the stupid fella’s plaec. Never again will I eat there!

  5. Yeah, boycott! Read today’s Star – 23 September 2010. Reader’s letter titled “Boycott arrogant hawker”. We Penangites will say “so eow kui-meh?”

  6. jz wondering, everyone talking bout the “HUGE” prawns…if that is the main attraction, there r plenty in seafood restaurants…”yeow kui” pgites…

  7. “Hi there, I observe that your published content material is rather understanding since it talks about lots of fascinating details. In Any Occasion, was wondering whether you’d wish to interchange internet links with my site, as I’m searching to ascertain contacts to additional amplify and acquire ground for my word wide web portal. I don’t mind you laying my word wide web back links in the principal page, just approving this links on this specific internet page is much more than adequate. Anyway, would you be kind enough message me again at my web page if you’re eager in swapping links, I’d actually value that. Thanks a great deal and I hope to hear from you shortly! “

  8. I haven’t been there recently, it was last December (2009) when I visited. Granted, the “goggle lady” wasn’t all ha-ha, hee-hee, but she was pleasant enough and said “no problem” to my taking a photo of her.

And the noodles? Superb, they are the one to beat – smoky, lightly charred, crunch beansprouts, five fresh prawns. Just perfect. Went to two sisters’ but they had a “locum” and it fell flat.

Just don’t antagonise the goggle lady that’s all. She’s an artist and has to work over a smoky hot wok – just try doing that for a few hours and see how you survive.
