Dry Bak Kut Teh at Qian Li Xiang USJ
Dry Bak Kut Teh at Qian Li Xiang USJ
We heard so much about dry bak kut teh (BKT) but never had a chance to try one before. Coincidently, yesterday night we stumbled upon a dry BKT restaurant near Summit USJ.
We didn’t know that dry BKT is their specialty as we thought it just another BKT restaurant. The owner had a lengthy chat with us and we got to know that they have been running this business for more than 3 years. On top of that, they have branches in Melaka and Johor as well. Thus, the owner was telling us that the restaurant had won an award and our Tourism Minister Dr. Ng Yen Yen presented him the prize.
Award winning restaurant or not, let the food do the talking. We ordered the dry BKT and a bowl of “tau fu pok”. Hence, we didn’t order other food so that we can concentrate on the BKT.
The dry BKT came in a claypot. We were excited to try the dry BKT for the first time. The meat was coated with thick BKT sauce. The meat was cooked with lady’s fingers, dry chilies and dry cuttlefish. This was explained to us by the owner. Please bear in mind that this is not a sponsored or paid review. The taste was similar “salted fish with pork belly claypot” but the dry BKT was sweeter, hints of BKT taste, spiciness and saltiness due to the dry cuttlefish. Thus, we find that it went well with rice.
The “tau fu pok” with BKT soup was ordinary, nothing to shout about.
Overall, the dry BKT was definitely different than the traditional BKT. We believed that the younger generation would love this especially the kids. Loved it or not, we find the dry BKT interesting but we still prefer the old school soup based BKT and they do offer the ordinary BKT too.
