China House Beach Street Penang Review
China House Beach Street Penang Review
We heard so many raves and reviews about this restaurant in Penang. Well, of course it is China House at Beach Street, Penang.
Ideally in a traditional compound of the colonial (pre-war) building on Beach Street, China House offered more than just a pleasant dining experience, the ambience. The restaurant was intelligently decorated combined with its original architecture so it looked more like an art gallery than a restaurant. In fact, they did have an art theatre and shopping section on top of the F&B (food and beverages).
I was in China House a couple of weeks ago and I was quite impressed with the interior and ambience. Let me to be frank, I saw similar style of restaurant in Kuching some years ago but China House had better style and taste in term of décor.
I was there with a group of people and luckily we reserved a table or else we had to dine somewhere else. It was packed thanks to many positive reviews.
They occupied three buildings so you have lots of choices in terms of spaces and seating. I was surprised to find this small baby pool in their restaurant.
We started with Grilled Prawn, Mango and Avocado Salad with Pistachio and Basil Dressing.
We didn’t miss the Spicy Carrot Soup with Ginger Raita. It didn’t get too spicy to overwhelm the taste of the carrot soup, it was a great start.
Spaghetti – Ginger Bud Pesto w. Grilled Chicken Breast. Nothing too fancy.
Chicken and Mushroom Pie with Mashed Potato and Mixed Leaves. I didn’t like the burn mark on top of the pie’s crust but the taste was on the other side of the story.
Parmesan Crumbled Chicken Schnitzel, Sweet Potato Mash and Rocket Salad. I never had chicken schnitzel for a while and this was comfort food. I always fancy having a mashed sweet potato and after having one I still prefer the normal mashed potato. Well, it was just too sweet to my liking and did I mention the chicken schnitzel was good?
The pricing was on the medium and the high side. The food was overall above average and it didn’t really shines. Since I was there during weekend, it took them quite a while to sort out the orders. I loved the whole concept and experience, this is a place you can mingle around, chat and impress your girlfriends.
