Tasmania 2012 Travelogue Day One: Cataract Gorge Reserve, Basin Café, Country Club Tasmania

Tasmania 2012 Travelogue Day One: Cataract Gorge Reserve, Basin Café, Country Club Tasmania

It was my first time traveling to Tasmania, one of the most beautiful places to travel in Australia. It was a full six days of traveling in Tassie (short form of Tasmania) and it will be an exciting trip. I was in Tassie on March, one of the best times in terms of weather and climate.

After more than 10 hours of flying from Kuala Lumpur, I reach Launceston Tasmania including stops at Singapore and Melbourne. I was joined by friends and media reps from Singapore, China and Hong Kong and separated by groups. Since it was a self drive trip, we were assigned in different cars with a tour leader. Our tour leader is Rose and I was traveling with Singaporean Blogger Mel and a journalist from Hong Kong.

The first stop was Cataract Gorge Reserve, one of the highlights of Launceston Tasmania. Launceston is located at the north of the heart shape island of Tasmania.

Cataract Gorge Reserve

The gorge’s powerful presence can affect people deeply and it has been recognised as a sacred and healing place by Tasmanian Aborigines for thousands of years.

The 160 ha reserve has a fascinating mix of nature and heritage, with cliffgrounds, Victorian gardens, bushlands, walking trails, the swift-flowing South Esk River, an historic suspension bridge, the world’s longest single-span chairlift and an art deco-style swimming pool – all in the heart of Launceston. Did you know that they have the World Longest Single Chairlift World Longest Single Chairlift? We wrote an article a few weeks go and you still can read about it at World Longest Single Chairlift at Launceston’s Basin Chairlift, Tasmania. The chairlift, built in 1972, has a total span of 457 m (1,499 ft).

Expect to spend hours venturing Cataract Gorge, we only traveled to a smart part of this place. You can take hours venturing all the walks there. Bring a towel and lots of drinking water. Walking and hiking during the day can be quite exhausting.

If you are bringing children, make sure you guide them properly on the walks and there is a public swimming pool for your perusal. Bring you own towel and wet suits if you are planning to dip onto the beautiful pool.

Swimming in the lake will be at your own risk.

Lunch

The Basin Cafe

Within the wonderful surrounds of the Cataract Gorge, the cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, and morning and afternoon teas. You can contemplate the spectacular gorge over a meal or a coffee. The café is right by the chairlift.

The cafe offers a striking panoramic view of Cataract Gorge. Having lunch with such a stunning view is perfect for any occasions. The idea of booking the restaurant for a group gathering or functions is ideal too!

After lunch we went to check in one of the most recognized hotels in Tasmania, the Country Club Tasmania.

Country Club Tasmania

A country retreat on 145 hectares, Country Club Resort is located in bushland about 10 minutes from the centre of Launceston. Activities include golf on an 18-hole championship course, walking, wildlife-spotting, tennis, squash and horse-riding.

Facilities include a boutique casino, licensed restaurants and bar, an indoor pool, gym, sauna and spa. Accommodation choices range from rooms and suites to four-star apartments.

I spent hours in the casino (as usual) enjoying myself. Table bets starts from A$10 which is quite reasonable. The common games like Blackjack and Baccarat is available as well as the slot machines or better known as the Pokies in Australia.

Everyone is pretty tired at the first day of Tasmania because there are medias traveling from Singapore, Hong Kong and China. I traveled for more than 10 hours myself so everyone is quite jet lagged. Even for the first day, I am very impressed with the beauty of Launceston Tasmania. I am looking forward for the remaining five days!
