Interview with Mediviron UOA Clinic’s owner Dr Chen Tai Ho

Medical tourism is a lucrative business and in Kuala Lumpur, Mediviron UOA Clinic is getting popular with its Aesthetic services. There, I met up with the owner and a doctor himself, Dr Chen Tai Ho. My interview with him is a casual one and he is the first doctor I interview for medical tourism.

Dr Chen Tai Ho possesses a double degree, namely the Bachelor Degree in Medical Science (honours) and Degree in Medicine (MD). Dr Chen has practiced medicine for 11 years.

After embarking on the Certificate in Aesthetic Medicine (USA), he pursued and completed the Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine (USA). Dr Chen is a member of Society of Anti-Aging, Aesthetics & Regenerative Medicine of Malaysia (SAAARM) and Malaysian Society of Aesthetic Medicine (MSAM).

Dr Chen was based in Penang but he decided to come back to Kuala Lumpur when he took over Mediviron UOA Clinic, and within months, he revamped the clinic and turns it to a profitable business.

In a matter of time, more doctors joined Dr Chen at Mediviron UOA clinic for the Aesthetic services. Aesthetic service includes minor surgeries and non-invasive treatment. Treatments include Hair Loss, Weight Loss, Eye Lid Procedure, Excesive Sweating Treatment, Body Contouring and many others. With good reputation and clientele, it is no doubt Mediviron UOA clinic is the success story of Dr Chen.

In every business there is a competition but in this field, the challenge is a different scenario. According to Dr Chen, the challenge of this business is there are many illegal and unlicensed clinics and beauty parlours offering Aesthetic services. Thus, they often throw prices as they are not regulated by the Health Ministry and not forgetting using low grade materials from China which are mostly not proven or tested.

The competition from the other clinics is getting stiffer too. For example in Publika alone, there are five to six Aesthetic clinics available. Imagine having so many clinics in one area is not going to be easy.

Most of their current customers are a good mixture of locals and tourists. With the word of mouth, they have a wide range of clientele from walk-ins to VIPs and there are also tourists who visited them for small procedures such as CoolSculpting. As Mediviron UOA clinic is located right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, it is one of the clinics which is actively promoting medical tourism.

Dr Chen believes in giving the best services, attractive prices and bringing in the latest technology and keeping up with the competition. For example, the latest machine that is coming to his clinic is Vanquish. Vanquish was launched in September 2013, there are only two clinics in Malaysia has this machine. By having the latest technology, customers have more options with treatments available in the clinic.

Medical tourism is definitely still booming in Malaysia. There are many tourists from Indonesia prefer to travel to private hospitals in Penang and there are also many agents who bring clients from overseas to do procedures or operations in Malaysia. For the pricing, Malaysia remains competitive with Thailand and cheaper than Singapore.

At Mediviron UOA Clinic, they do not depend on agents but on their website. Most of their clients are tourists traveling to Kuala Lumpur from each corner of the world.
