Tonkatsu by Ma Maison
Tonkatsu is a popular Japanese dish which consists of breaded deep fried pork cutlet. It can be served with shredded cabbage, rice, Japanese curry or as a sandwich filling. Tonkatsu is hard to find in Malaysia as most Japanese restaurants in Malaysia is either pork free or Halal certified and to find a delicious tonkatsu is a harder task.
Some time ago, I went to Tonkatsu by Ma Maison at Eat Paradise, Isetan, One Utama Old Wing near the famous “Samurai” ramen. Tonkatsu by Ma Maison is not something new in Japan as it was founded by Akinori Terazawa in Tokyo in 1976. There are 16 outlets across Japan and a few more in Singapore and Malaysia.
Like many popular restaurants, I have to queue for a table at Tonkatsu by Ma Maison. After a good twenty minutes of waiting, we got our table by their friendly staffs.
Before going to main course, I ordered the Coke Float. Nothing spectacular to mention but just a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of iced cold coke. Root beer float is better.
We tried the Mixed Katsu Set which consists of deep fried prawn, pork fillet and white fish. You get to choose your type of rice, white or grain rice. Thus, cabbage and soup is refillable. I must say, their deep fried prawn and white fish is delectable. I know it is hard to go wrong with fried food but it is just so sinful and addictive. Of course, their pork fillet is amazing.
Their pork fillet or tonkatsu lives up to the reputation. The fillet is deep fried to perfection with crispy outer layer and tender meat. It is definitely one of the best tonkatsu in town.
If you intend to count your calories, you don’t need to visit this restaurant or else just drop by for some sinful tonkatsu feast. I am not sure whether you book the table or not but be there early or expect to queue. I heard they recently opened a new branch in Pavilion.
