Old Man Restaurant (老吔海鲜饭店) Kajang / Bandar Baru Bangi: Iced Sweet and Sour Pork

This is another popular restaurant in Kajang (near Bandar Baru Bangi). The Old Man Restaurant (老吔海鲜饭店) featured in Ho Chak TV program and a few newspapers some time ago. Well, this restaurant is recommended by my parents’ friends so we went there to taste some of their specialties.

The restaurant was quiet packed when we went there. They have many regular customers from the nearby neighbourhood.

For starter, we had their Signature Chicken Soup. They had the whole chicken in the pot and with herbs and the taste is pretty good.

Stir Fried Green Dragon Vegetables. We are not sure the real name of this vegetables and it is obvious the ‘green dragon’ is translated from Chinese. The taste is simple and light and if you never tasted ‘green dragon’ vegetables before, you can order this.

Signature Homemade Tofu. This is pretty common, minced meat sauce with silky smooth tofu. This goes really well with rice.

Thai Style Fried Chicken. Chicken deep fried to crispiness and poured with sweet Thai sauce. No surprises on the taste, this dish is quite common in Chinese restaurants.

Iced Sweet and Sour Pork (ku lou yok). Well, this is something innovative. Sweet and sour pork in the bamboo pot and topped with ice cubes. The innovation is cool but the taste is average. We don’t get the idea of chilling it with the ice cubes. If the pork is surrounded with iced then it is pretty cool. By the way, this Iced Sweet and Sour Pork was featured in Hong Kong movie ‘The Banquet’ in the 1990s.

Overall the food here is above average. For pricing, it is definitely cheaper than KL or PJ. Food prices in Kajang is always reasonable. Just beware of snatch thieves here as it is quite common in this part of Kajang.
