Ever wonder why we travel to Thai so often? It is one of the best places to travel in the world. The Thais in general is very friendly and discipline in general, similar with the Japanese if you ask us. There is a reason why the country is called ‘The Land of Smiles’ as the people there will always smile to you.
Two years ago, I was at Chiang Rai for the inaugural Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta for the first time. It was held at Singha Park in Chiang Rai or also known as Boon Rawd Farm, a social enterprise project by Singha Group.
I was there with a couple of friends and overall I was very impressed by festival, the hot air balloon participants from all the world and the locals.
The Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta becomes bigger and bigger after that. This year, Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta attracted 50,000 guests and mostly locals from all around Thailand and from Chiang Rai.
50,000 people is a lot of people and it can fill up most in any English Premier League football stadium. If you have been to a huge event in Malaysia with that huge amount of people, you know how chaotic the scene is especially the cleanliness of the area, the toilet as well as how congested is the parking area.
At the Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, you get to see many hot air balloons participants from all around the world, you can also participate the local activities in the park, local food stalls, restaurants and a mini concert. The park itself is a popular tourist attraction in Chiang Rai and there is also glamping available during the winter season.
For a park to hold 50,000 guests is not a simple task. What you see in the pictures will show you how Thais behave in a huge event like Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta.
The locals will queue up for food and toilet. Not just the Japanese are well disciplined, the Thais are very friendly and well behaved too.
For those who didn’t know the unspoken rules of how Thais use the toilet. The Thai girls will also use the Men Toilet’s cubicles! I had a culture shock when that happened. Since the female toilets are also packed, the Thai girls will also queue up for Men Toilet’s cubicles. As usual, the toilets in Thailand in general is very clean.
At the concert, everyone enjoyed the music with local food galore and a glass of Singha (for most).
Everyone had their food and clean it up. You don’t see thrash anywhere in the park. The locals will keep the place and park clean. This is the culture of the Thais, they are very clean, civic minded and friendly.
What happened when 50,000 guests leaving the park? Is there a huge traffic jam for hours? The answer is no.
The Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is a well organised event. During my visit, I was impressed how they coordinated the parking system. The park created a huge open space for parking lots near the exit to the main road. From the parking lots, they hired dozens of local tuk tuks to ferry guests to the event space. The local tuk tuks will work non-stop during the fiesta.
It will take some time to wait for the tuk tuks and the locals will queue for it. You don’t hear arguments or people jump queueing as this is very uncommon for the locals.
You have to respect how the Thais behave and discipline in a huge event like this. Everyone is patient and enjoy the event. They also have the good intention to keep the place clean whether after food or in the toilet. This is Thais in general and this is why amazing Thailand. This is also the reason why I travel to Thailand so often every year!
The Singha Park International Hot Balloon Fiesta held at Singha Park Chiang Rai every year during the week of Valentine’s Day. The weather during this time is cooling around 20 degree Celsius. If you never been to Chiang Rai before, you can consider attending the Singha Park International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta in the future with your loved ones for Valentine’s Day.
