Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Southern Thailand. The main stupa of the temple, the Phra Borommathat Chedi (‘great noble relics stupa’), was built by King Sri Dhammasokaraja in the early-13th century CE to establish a symbol for the Theravada Buddhism sect in the province. The temple is believed to house a tooth of Gautama Buddha.
You can also find King Taksin at the temple compound area. King Taksin or the King of Thonburi was the only King of the Thonburi Kingdom.
There is a long red staircase inside Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan. It can be quite packed inside as there are many people coming in and out.
There is a Golden Buddha within the temple and most of the worshippers are locals. There is also Hae Pha Khuen That celebrations at Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan annually.
The celebrations are marked by a procession with a robe, known as Phra Bot, joined in a single piece to wrap around the bell shaped body of the main stupa and the chedis. Traditionally white robes painted with scenes from the life of Buddha are used, but sometimes plain white, red, or yellow robes are also used. The festival is believed to have started in 1230 when the main stupa was completed.
