Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae Tuptim Nai Lert
This is something unique we encountered during our trip to Bangkok in 2016. We went to Northern Thailand for one week before extending our stay in Bangkok for another few days. We were staying at Swissotel Nai Lert Park in Bangkok and surprisingly the Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae Tuptim is located within the compound.
This is something interesting you need to know. Swissotel Nai Lert Park was closed on Dec 2016 and luckily we manage to stay there before it was converted to the hospital. For the Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae, it was shifted to a new location in 2018.
The photos of the Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae Tuptim Nai Lert were taken before they were relocated. You can check out the map of the new location below which is 200m south of Nai Lert Park Heritage Home.
From what we know, the shrine was created in the first quarter of the 20th century by Thai businessman Nai Lert who found a spirit house floating in the canal and the placed at the back of his property.
Why the penis? In Thailand, the phallus is consider symbol of good luck and representative of fertility and hence you can find many penis sculptures around the shrine. This is not the only penis shrine in Thailand as there is another one at Phra Nang Island in Krabi.
You can find locals come here to pray at Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae Tuptim Nai Lert. Maybe they are praying for good luck or fertility, we are not sure.
This is something unique you can find in Bangkok, something that we do when we travel in this part of Thailand from time to time. That is another reason why we stayed at different parts of Bangkok so we can experience different things and try different food.
How to go to Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae Tuptim Nai Lert?
You can take the train to BTS Phloen Chit Station and then you can walk to the Nai Lert Park Heritage Home which is around 5-10 minutes walk behind Central Embassy Shopping Mall along Witthayu Road. Just inform the guard at Nai Lert Park Heritage Home you want to visit the Bangkok Penis Shrine Chao Mae Tuptim Nai Lert.
